Boxwood (Huanghang)
Buxus L.

Boxwood is a slow growing tree with some varieties reaching only 10-15cm diameter after 100 years. Different species are harvest in Hubei, Jiangxi and Sichuan; However, forests of Laoshan in Shandong produce timber with diameters reaching 30cm.
Boxwood is a small tree and is often used as inlay , giving a great light colour when polished, and improved when exposed to light. It is very rare to find wood stands carved only from boxwood due to the diameter of the timber, and also the wood is very dry and prone to splitting. Therefore the skill of the artist in the above stand is paramount.
