Item 151

Set of 9 Christian subject paintings, attributed to Liu Hebei.

Liu Hebei (Monica Liu) is an award-winning artist and a master of Chinese brush painting. She is also a professor of Art History and the author of numerous articles on theology and art. As a live-in student of Pu Ru, the cousin of Puyi, the last emperor of China, Liu became a professor at the Art Institute of Chicago and an University in Taiwan for almost half a century. Monica Liu’s Christian theme paintings are meditations that witness enculturated faith. She uses mostly the calligraphy Chinese style of painting, the colour pencil and color ink with brushes. Her imageries and symbols are typically Chinese and her canvas is mostly rice paper.
These Christian theme paintings are delicately depicted and are really rare and unique in Chinese art history. Religious painting was the artist’s forte. Her work was highly valued by the Taiwanese government and was given as a gift to the Pope, Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City.
